6 Secrets To Keeping Chickens Healthy During Winter

February 22, 2019 by chris

chickens

Winter is a scary time for new chicken owners. We want our flock to be warm, healthy and happy — which can be challenging with freezing temperatures and snow coating the ground.

Fortunately, once you figure it out, raising chickens in the winter isn’t that hard. Most chickens are hardy and able to handle the cool temperatures. Here are some crucial tips that will make the winter experience better for you and the flock.

1. Don’t add a heater; add insulation

If you are considering a heater for your chicken coop, I caution you to back away. My husband is a firefighter and has responded to dozens of chicken coop fires over the years. It is not safe. All of the bedding is begging to start a fire.

Chickens don’ t need a heater. They huddle together for warmth. Insulation is a better choice, but you need to add that when you build your chicken coop. You also don’t want to seal off the coop entirely. Ventilation will prevent moisture from building up. All of the droppings and no ventilation will lead to ammonia in your coop, and that is a recipe for sickness.

There is a huge difference between ventilation and drafts. You don’t want drafts. Ventilation areas should be above where the chickens roost, ensuring they don’t get cold. Typically, it is the space between the roof and walls, covered with hardware cloth. You don’t want a predator entering!

2. Add entertainment

Winter can be boring for humans and chickens. They need something to do with their time as they hang out in the coop more often. A popular option is hanging a head of cabbage as a play toy. They will peck at the cabbage dangling from the ceiling.

You can even provide a dust bathing area. Put a tub of sand or wood ash mixed with food grade diatomaceous earth. Some people just put it on the ground in the coop and let them scratch it up.

Either way, chickens love to bathe and dust themselves! Plus, it helps keep lice and mites away.

3. Provide covered outdoor space

Many chickens prefer not to step in snow. I found that out when only two of my chickens would dare venture outside after a snowstorm. Giving them a covered space outside allows them to venture out, whether they are fans of snow or not.

The solution can be as easy as adding a tarp over part of the run. They just need an area without snow, unless you want to go shovel. But, no one likes to shovel, so just save yourself a backache and create a makeshift roof.

Another solution is to scatter hay and straw on the ground outside to cover the snow. When the temperatures start to increase around the low 30s, chickens may venture out even without snow protection. Under those temperatures, it is hard to convince them.

4. Coat their combs and wattles

Unfortunately, I had no idea that breeds with large combs and wattles are more prone to frostbite. One of our roosters years ago, Sven, loved to stand outside, even in the negative temperatures. I noticed black tips on his comb, and the tips eventually fell off.

Chickens can get frostbite just as easily as we do. To protect their combs and wattles, gently smear some petroleum jelly on them each day when you go to check their food and water. Don’t worry; if your chickens get frostbite as mine did, it typically just affects their appearance.

5. Give appropriate roost space

You might have to adjust your coop design if you find that you don’t have enough roosting space for each chicken. Chickens fluff their feathers and roost together at night. It keeps them warm and snug. Warmer air rises, keeping them comfortable.

Venture outside once all the chickens are roosting to see if everyone has a spot. If someone is on the ground, you need to add more space. That poor chicken on the ground is going to be cold and more vulnerable.

6. Give them greens

In the summer, chickens have access to delicious and healthy greens, especially if they can free range. Winter limits those choices. It is hard for them to forage and find anything substantial. Try to make an effort to give them safe kitchen scraps as often as possible.

Another choice is to learn how to grow fodder yourself inside. Fodder is an excellent supplement for your chickens in the winter months. It will boost the quality of your eggs, as well.

If you live in an area that receives extremely low temperatures regularly, you will want to make sure that you pick cold-hardy chickens. Some breeds handle lower temperatures better. However, with these tips, you can guarantee all of your chickens will be healthy and happy come spring time.

Urban Homesteading: 7 Keys To Attaining Self-Sufficiency In The City

February 22, 2019 by chris

Anyone who is serious about urban homesteading needs to start out by scaling up their gardening efforts.

There has been a positive trend going on for several years in the prepping and survival community, a trend towards self-sufficiency. That’s good because several of the major disasters we could potentially be facing are severe enough that normal prepping just isn’t going to cut it. When the recovery period from the disaster is too long to stockpile for, our only true chance for survival is to be self-sufficient.

Having A Realistic Vision For Homesteading And Self-Sufficiency

But there’s a perception problem that’s going hand-in-hand with the move towards self-sufficiency. That’s the idea that we all need to sell our homes and move out into the country where we can buy enough land to start a homestead.

I’ll have to say, that idea is definitely an attractive one. In fact, I wouldn’t mind doing it myself. Nevertheless, the reality is that land is expensive and there are a lot of us who can’t afford to sell our homes. We can’t buy a homestead out in the country no matter how much we’d like to. Besides, our work requires that we live in the city or at least in the suburbs.

That doesn’t mean that we need to give up on the idea of homesteading, however. It just means we need to scale down our homesteading ideas to fit the home and property we have. Maybe we can’t plant a field of corn and maybe we can’t raise goats. Nonetheless, we can still raise food for our families.

There have been a number of articles written over the years about people who have raised all their own food in their backyards. I used to live next to one. Even though we lived in a housing development with tiny backyards, he still managed to grow almost all the vegetables his family consumed. If he could do it, I don’t see why we can’t as well.

Urban Homesteading Tip #1: Scale Up Your Gardening

Anyone who is serious about homesteading needs to start out by scaling up their gardening efforts. Think about it a moment; what good is all that lawn doing you anyway? Having a lawn to take care of just takes away your energy and yet it doesn’t give you anything in return. Ok, granted, your kids can play on it… assuming your kids still play outdoors. But what else do you use it for?

Let me warn you here; it’s going to take several years to get your gardening efforts up to the point where you are raising all your own food. I wouldn’t try getting there in one year. Instead, add a few garden beds every year. That way, you’ll have the time you need to get the soil in good condition so that you can get the maximum yield out of your garden.

Urban Homesteading Tip #2: Wean Off Of Chemicals

American gardeners tend to be hooked on chemical gardening. I’m not talking about hydroponics but rather the use of chemical fertilizers, weed killers, and insecticides. While all that stuff is great, it’s not going to be available in a post-disaster world. Unless we’ve already switched, you and I are going to have to learn a whole new kind of gardening. It’ll have to be more like our pioneering ancestors and how they handled things.

Urban Homesteading Tip #3: Fertilizers

If you’re not already composting, now’s a good time to start. Composting is simple and gives us a great way of reusing the nutrients stored up in parts of plants that we don’t use. Make sure that you add the waste from your chickens or rabbits to your compost as well. If you do, you’re going to have some great nutrients for topping off your garden before shutting it down for the winter.

There are many other natural fertilizers you can utilize such as eggshells, coffee grounds, and even watered-down urine. Notwithstanding, one of my favorites is fish emulsion. It’s something that harkens back to the days of the Indians teaching the Pilgrims how to farm.

You can make fish emulsion from any fish scraps you have. Simply save them up in the freezer and then when you need to make some more, chop them up in a blender and mix them with water. Allow the mixture to sit and decompose in the sun for a few weeks, mixing every couple of days. The resulting liquid will be high in all the critical nutrients for your garden, thereby providing one of the best fertilizers you can find.

Urban Homesteading Tip #4: Weed Control

Commercial weed killers actually contain some pretty stout chemicals. I prefer to go with something more natural myself. In my garden, that means pulling the weeds and adding them to my compost bin. However, for areas where I’m not growing anything, I make a weed killer out of vinegar, Epson salt, and dishwashing liquid. It does take a bit more than the commercial stuff to kill the weeds, but it works.

Urban Homesteading Tip #5: Pest Control

Pest control is actually one of the easiest things to take care of naturally. There are a number of plants whose aromas will act as an insect repellant. These will readily keep common pests out of your garden. Some of those same plants will keep flies and mosquitoes away from your deck or patio too if you plant them around it.

For insects which aren’t repulsed by the smell of basil, lavender, mint, rosemary, or garlic, you might have to up your game a bit. That’s where beneficial insects come in. There are actually a number of carnivorous insects that you want to have in your garden because they will kill the pests you don’t want. At a minimum, you want ladybugs and praying mantises, but there are others which can help as well.

Urban Homesteading Tip #6: You’ve Got To Have Water

The other big area that most people don’t really think about for their survival gardening is water. There are a lot of people who quote the “one gallon of water per person a day” figure. Yet, they forget that one gallon is only enough for drinking and cooking. It’s going to take a lot more than that to take care of your garden.

There’s absolutely no way you’re going to be able to stockpile enough water for your garden unless you have a huge tank or a swimming pool. Even then, you might be able to stockpile enough for a year. But then, what will you do the next year? You’ve got to have some means of harvesting water. You’ll need either a well or rainwater capture unless you are fortunate enough to live by a river.

Of course, you can minimize the amount of water you need to use for gardening. I live in a hot climate, so I do all my watering at night after the sun goes down. This strategy gives the water a chance to soak into the ground and then the plants get the opportunity to soak up that water before the sun evaporates it.

I also use underground watering, which I set up with a pump and a timer. The system can run on my off-grid solar power system so that it’s sustainable even after the power goes out. By making my watering automatic, I actually save water while ensuring that I don’t miss out on watering my garden. Otherwise, I may accidentally kill it off. That’s actually a very real problem where I live.

Urban Homesteading Tip #7: Then There’s Your Livestock

Ok, maybe you can’t have livestock in an urban homestead, but that’s not to say that you can’t have chickens and rabbits. Where I live, I’m limited to six adult birds and that’s it. This figure limits me to enough layers to provide me with eggs. I suppose I could raise some fryers as well and butcher them as soon as they became adults. This would meet the letter of the law while allowing me to raise more chickens for food.

Rabbits grow rapidly and are easy to care for so they’re a great option as well. Besides, we all know that rabbits are very prolific. As a result, you’ll always have more little bunnies growing. They don’t take up much room and, like the chickens, they will eat just about anything from your garden that your family doesn’t. Altogether, feeding both your chickens and your rabbits will be easy.

12 Essential Preps Before You Get Snowed In

February 22, 2019 by chris

winter storm

Weather has always been unpredictable, but recent weather patterns have only made it more so. Your winter preparedness should provide for the real possibility of getting snowed in, even if your area historically does not receive much precipitation.

A single winter storm can derail normal life, piling several feet of snow on roads, literally imprisoning you for anywhere between a few days to even weeks. Power outages may add to the trouble. And just when you think things can’t get any worse, some medical emergency might crop up.

1. Check your snow busters

Check your regular equipment for dealing with the snow in your walkway and drive, and get them out of storage well before it arrives. Snow shovels and plenty of rock salt and or other chemical de-icing compounds are a must, as you cannot depend on an electrically operated snow blower if there’s a power outage. Make sure you have plenty of fuel in stock if you’re using a gas-powered one. These machines need to be serviced well in advance, too.

2. Do a bit of cleaning around the house

The roof and gutters should be cleared of dead leaves and accumulated debris to prevent seepage and backup of water that can damage the roofing and the walls. If tree branches are growing over the roof, check for risk of breakage, and do a bit of proactive pruning. Get loose roof tiles and other potential weak points fixed.

3. Check the waterlines

All exposed pipes and faucets, including the lawn watering system, should be drained of water to avoid pipe bursts and leaks due to frost damage. Make sure that the internal network of water pipes is well-insulated.

4. Inspect the heating system

Get certified technicians to check your heating system and get the required repairs done now. You don’t want to be in a long queue of homeowners needing their attention in the height of winter.

5. Fix air leaks

Prevent icicle formation and melt water dripping by identifying air leaks and getting them fixed before you get snowed in. Add weather-stripping around doors and apply caulk to reduce the gap around windows.

6. Stock enough food supplies to sustain your family

Easy availability of food all year has made Americans slack on storage. It’s time to take stock of what you have, and what you need, for surviving a week or two without stepping out of the house, if need be. Buy and keep food stuffs that can be used right out of the cans, in case you have to go without refrigeration and cooking for a few days.

New Lantern Provides 100,000 Hours of Emergency Backup Lighting With No Open Flames

Here’s a brief list of what you can stock and use in the absence of power:

  • Breakfast cereals winter storm

    winter storm

  • Canned soups
  • Baked beans
  • Beef jerky
  • Dry food bars
  • Evaporated milk
  • Fresh fruit
  • Dried fruits and nuts
  • Ready-to-eat snacks

Have enough disposable plates and cups to eat and drink from, in case you can’t use the dishwasher. Also, don’t forget about pets. Pets have special needs, and you should take them into account while preparing for winter. Have plenty of pet food, and a few emergency veterinary drugs for your pet. Also, have plenty of diapers and baby formula/food for the youngest members of your family.

7. Stock water and beverages

You should be prepared for disruptions of supplies any time. Ensure that there’s plenty of drinking water in store. Melting the snow for drinking purposes should be your last option. Factor in at least a gallon of water for each person in the family. Whole fruit juices and herbal tea can meet some of your fluid requirement, so have plenty of them in stock, too.

8. Check on medical supplies

Provide for the exigency of not having access to medical help or supplies. Have a first-aid kit and emergency drugs on hand. Equipment to check blood pressure and blood sugar should have spare batteries.

9. Buy battery-powered lights and radios

All your electrical appliances go silent without power. Battery-powered devices are the handiest alternatives .

That includes flash lights, a radio to receive weather broadcasts and cell phones with fully charged power banks.

10. Have plenty of warm clothing

Efficient air-conditioning in our homes has made us very complacent about changes in weather. However, in the absence of room heating, every member of the family would need blankets, jackets, mittens and warm headgear.

11. Consider alternative heat

You may need to use portable space heaters or fireplaces to keep warm, and a gas-operated stove and grill for cooking. Or, in an extreme case, you could install a temporary wood-burning stove. During winter, it’s essential to consider alternative forms of heat.

12. Fill up the fuel tanks

Even if you’re planning on traveling during foul weather, it pays to be prepared. Rock salt, a bag of sand, a shovel and tire chains should be part of the equipment you keep in the car (assuming chains are allowed in your state). Blankets, cans of water and a portable stove can save your life during emergencies. Have a few flares handy so that a rescue team can locate you in case you get stranded.

Just because your area has not received much snow or ice in the last 10 years doesn’t mean it won’t happen. Every year in America, towns and cities in “warmer states” are slammed with a winter storm they weren’t expecting. Never take anything for granted and always, always be prepared.

12 Seeds You Need To Start NOW For Spring Planting

February 21, 2019 by chris

seeds

For many of us, late January is still cold and snowy, but the days are lengthening, and warmer temperatures are on the way. It’s so tempting to break out the seeds!

But planting seeds too early can backfire unless you have a setup that includes things like heated seed propagation mats, grow lights, and consistent regulated temperatures. I don’t. I do have a terrific enclosed south-facing verandah with lots of windows, but the days are still short here, without the amount of sun many seedlings need. This can make for spindly, weak plants that stretch towards the light, and that are unable to support the weight of their leaves. Also, the temperature is hardly consistent, given the blasts of cold air each time the door is opened.

That said, some seeds can be started by late January with just a little care. Often, these are seeds that germinate slowly, with their seedlings becoming established in mid-late February, when the amount of sunlight and daily temperatures have both increased.

When choosing what to plant this time of year, always check seed packages (or research the varieties you’re planting) to find out the expected number of days to maturity. Then, cross check that with the last expected frost date in your area, which you can find here. Don’t choose seeds that will mature before your last frost date — you need to move your plants outside after the last frost so that they can finish growing outside for the best results and flavor.

General Hint

The top of your refrigerator is often warm enough to replicate a heated propagation mat. If you’re sowing seeds that need heat to germinate, keep them on top of your fridge. Once sprouted, the seedlings should be moved to a window area to get as much sunlight as possible.

Strawberries

It can be tricky to grow strawberries from seeds, but it’s much more fulfilling than buying established plants at a nursery.

Get The All-Natural Fertilizer That Doubles Garden Production!

The earlier you start strawberry seeds, the more likely you’ll get fruit in the first year. Aim to start in January or even December. That said, strawberries are perennials. If you start late, you’ll still get plants, if not fruit, in the first year.

Strawberry seeds germinate best if they go through a stratification process. Put the whole package of seeds into an airtight plastic bag or container and toss them into the freezer for 3-4 weeks. When you take the seeds out, let them warm up to room temperature before removing them from the bag or container, so that they don’t get condensation on them as they thaw. Then, once planted, keep the cells or containers in a tray that has a thick piece of fabric placed on the bottom. Keep the fabric wet so that the soil in the containers can wick up moisture as needed, without sitting in water. Use bright fluorescent lights to supplement sunshine and keep the temperature between 65-75 °F (18-24 °C). Germination can take one to six weeks. Be patient!

Once strawberry seedlings have their third true leaf, transplant them to bigger pots. Make sure to harden them off before transplanting outside.

Onions, Leeks, and Shallots

It’s best to plant onion, leek, and shallot seeds about 10-12 weeks before the last frost date, which means sowing in January or February works well in most hardiness zones. All three need warmth to sprout; keep sown seeds on a heated propagation mat, on top of the fridge, or tucked under a plastic bag or dome. The seeds should sprout fairly quick, but the seedlings grow quite slowly. Like other plants started indoors, these should be first repotted into larger pots, before being hardened off and transplanted into the garden.

Celery and Celeriac

Celery and celeriac are relatively easy to start from seeds, but it can be a challenge to get these plants to produce in the garden, as they are averse to both cold and heat. If you’re up for the challenge, start in late January or February as the plants need about 90 days from seeding until they’re ready for transplanting. Mix the tiny seeds with sand and then sprinkle that mix on top of your potting soil. Celery is slow to germinate and grow, but it doesn’t require any help (like a heated propagation mat or wet fabric to wick moisture from). All it needs is patience.

Woody Herbs (Oregano, Rosemary, Sage, Thyme)

Herbs with woody stems are usually propagated by cuttings because they grow so slowly from seed. But that’s just what we want when we’re looking for seeds to start in January and February. Of the four herbs listed here, rosemary is the most finicky and hardest to grow from seed. It will need a heated propagation mat or fridge top and should be covered with plastic. Oregano, sage, and thyme, however, have no special requirement other than bright light. Once the seedlings are sturdy enough to handle, transplant them into larger pots. By late April or May, they should be ready to plant outdoors — just be sure to harden them off first.

Chili Peppers

In general, the hotter the pepper, the longer it takes to mature. Hot Rod peppers, for instance, only need 57 days to mature, while Habaneros take a minimum of 120 days. Keep this in mind when choosing which variety to plant now. All hot pepper plants need heat to flourish. Use a heated propagation mat, the top of your fridge, or at least keep your seeds and seedlings as toasty as possible, in a warm, draft-free location, and covered with a plastic bag or dome. You’ll need to repot them when they have several sets of leaves; they should be transplanted outdoors once overnight lows stay at 50°F (10°C) or warmer.

Eggplant

Like many of the other seeds that are suitable for early planting, eggplant seeds require warmth to germinate. The seeds are quite tiny; mix them with sand, if needed, and then sprinkle the sand mixture on your potting soil. Once planted, keep the cells or containers on top of your fridge, on a heated propagation mat, or covered with a plastic bag or cloche. It should take about one week for seeds to germinate. They’ll be ready to transplant in about four to six weeks, and ready to go into the garden 10-12 weeks after planting.

Have you started any seeds already? Do you have any tips for producing strong healthy seedlings when you sow seeds early? If so, please share in the comments below.

Breakdancing tipped for inclusion at Paris 2024 Olympics

February 21, 2019 by chris

Breakdancing is one of four additional sports expected to be included at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris along with surfing, sport climbing and skateboarding, sources indicated Wednesday.

The list of additions is due to be revealed by the local organising committee (OCOG) on Thursday and must be signed off on by the International Olympic Committee.

Their inclusion would come on top of the 28 sports already on the programme, although the Paris 2024 committee did not confirm the reports to AFP.

Stunning Report Details How Mighty Amazon Pays No Income Tax

February 21, 2019 by chris

Remarkably, Amazon pays no income tax even though it reported $232.087 billion in revenues for 2018. Furthermore, Amazon had $41.25 billion in the bank at the end of last year.

However, Amazon will pay no federal income taxes for 2018, the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy reports. Amazon will instead receive $129 million in federal tax credits, the Institute claims.

To summarize, Amazon pays no income tax but will get $129 million back from the IRS as a result of business operations last year. All in all, the Institute estimates Amazon’s 2018 taxable income at $5.6 billion.

Amazon Pays No Income Tax Despite Making A Lot Of Money

However, Stockrow reports that Amazon made a net income of $10.073 billion and had an operating income of $12.421 billion in 2018.

To elaborate, the net income figure is what Amazon had left over after paying all its expenses. In addition, the operating income amount consists of the money that Amazon makes off its operations.

Also, the aforementioned $232.087 billion in revenues represents all the money Amazon took in during 2018. Meanwhile, the $41.25 billion number above references the cash that Amazon had in the bank at the end of 2018.

Why Amazon Pays No Income Tax

Amazon pays no income tax because Uncle Sam only taxes certain kinds of corporate income. Consequently, the IRS does not tax most of the money that Amazon takes in.

Amazon, though, still pays many other taxes including sales taxes, property taxes, and state taxes. In other words, Amazon pays a lot of taxes but no federal income tax.

Nevertheless, little of Amazon’s taxes are going to the federal government as the budget deficit continually grows.

Amazon Pays No Income Tax While The Federal Deficit Grows

Ultimately, Amazon’s income tax situation will attract attention because we now have a record federal budget deficit.

In fact, the federal budget deficit for December 2018 was 41.8% higher than for December 2017, the Associated Press states. Meanwhile, federal tax revenues grew by only 0.2% during the same period.

Significantly, the deficit is the difference between government spending and taxes. The deficit exists because federal spending increased by 9.6% between December 2017 and December 2018 while revenues grew by just 0.2%.

Moreover, the budget will grow from $771.9 billion in 2018 to $897 billion in 2019, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) calculates. Because of this, the deficit could grow by 15.1% in 2019. Furthermore, the CBO projects that the budget deficit will exceed $1 trillion by 2022 with present tax revenues.

While Amazon Pays No Income Taxes, CEO Jeff Bezos Remains The World’s Richest Man

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is the world’s richest man with a fortune of $134.8 billion as of St. Valentine’s Day 2019.

In particular, Bezos owns 16% of Amazon which he began in a Seattle garage in 1994, Fortune reveals. Bezos is wealthy because of Amazon’s stock which was trading at $1,631.40 a share on February 14, 2019.

Democrats could potentially use Bezos’ fortune and the fact that Amazon pays no income taxes to demand higher income taxes overall. Tellingly, U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) is suggesting a federal income tax rate of 70% for the rich. Additionally, U.S. Senator and presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) wants to create a federal wealth tax.

Get Ready For Higher Taxes Because Amazon Pays No Income Taxes

Americans must get ready for higher income taxes because taxing the rich is quickly becoming a popular notion.

In fact, a Morning Consult survey estimates that 61% of voters like Warren’s wealth tax proposal. Also, 45% of voters like Ocasio-Cortez’s 70% tax on the rich.

In the final analysis, the revelation that Amazon pays no income tax will undoubtedly affect American politics in the near future. On balance, everybody’s taxes could increase simply because Amazon pays no taxes now.
