11 Winter Survival Skills Every Child Should Know

February 20, 2019 by chris

Survival Skills

Are you attached to your child at the hip every minute of every single day? Your children have a far greater chance of survival if they possess some basic self-reliance skills and have practiced the emergency disaster plan with the family.

Even if your work does not force you to leave the property and the children are homeschooled, they are still not protected from a crisis. Children, even the youngest ones in the family, must learn what to do if mommy and daddy are not home, are injured, or are killed, during a disaster. Teaching children about disaster should begin at a very early age and the information should be presented in a manner which does not scare the child, but still relays the seriousness of the issue.

For example, children are firmly taught that a stove is hot and not to touch it when they are a toddler, yet they do not fear walking by the stove when they scamper into the kitchen. Employ non-nonsense and loving tactics when educating children about emergency situations and their role during such situations.

Children need to learn what to do in event that specific disasters strikes. A checklist or picture book can help relay this message and reinforce the lessons learned during drills. Winter weather threats can quickly prove deadly for panicked children who suddenly find themselves without an adult around to save the day. If little Billy ventures out in the cold to look for help because the power went out, then he could get frostbit in mere minutes if not dressed properly.

Survival Skills to Teach Your Children

Some of the skills on this list may not be appropriate for young children, but here are 10 to consider:

  1. Foraging during winter and what can be eaten around the house.
  2. Starting a fire using multiple methods.
  3. Cooking over an open fire.
  4. How to use a “finger” saw to cut kindling.
  5. How to safely use a knife.
  6. Finding the way home, even in snow, from multiple directions.
  7. Warding off frostbite.
  8. How to dry damp or wet gloves, socks, and hats over a fire safely.
  9. Checking if frozen ponds and creeks are safe to walk on.
  10. Finding drinking water / melt snow to drink.
  11. Finding shelter when it’s cold.

Winter Survival Kit Items For Young Children

  • Picture book which details family emergency plan with family contact information typed inside the front cover. Pages specific to winter survival and other weather-related disaster tips should be included in the book.
  • Mylar blanket, gloves, hat, scarf, thermal socks, set of thermal underwear and handwarmers
  • Flashlight and glow sticks.
  • Basic first-aid kit with Band Aids, a quick clot bandage, triple antibiotic ointment, and antiseptic wipes.
  • Map created to guide the child to a designated meeting place if they must evacuate the home.
  • Several bottles of water and food which can be opened easily and eaten without heating.

Winter Survival Kit Items For Older Children

  • Copy of family emergency plan, family contact information
  • Flashlight and glow lights
  • Mylar blanket, gloves, hat, scarf, thermal socks, set of thermal underwear and handwarmers
  • Firestarter and reminder note about safety and details about starting a fire in the family fireplace or woodstove. Instructions on how to utilize the family solar generator if one is owned by the family.
  • Bottles of water and long-term storage food which can be heated in a pouch but also food items which do not require cooking.
  • Pocket knife, signaling mirror, binoculars and a compass

How To Insulate Your Survival Shelter With Snow

February 20, 2019 by chris

Survival Shelter

Cold weather puts a strain on anyone’s survival skills. The greatest problem you face is maintaining your body heat, which the cold will do everything it can to steal. Although being in a shelter can help protect you from the cold, it doesn’t always help as much as you’d like.

One of the biggest problems with most survival shelters is that they leak air. We have this problem with our homes as well, but a home heating system usually has enough overcapacity to make up for it. Nevertheless, those air leaks cost us money, in the sense that they make us burn more energy than we would otherwise.

If you have an energy audit done on your home, they will check for air leaks as well as places which aren’t properly insulated. Many people lose a lot of heat through their attic, because the insulation compresses over time, leaving them without enough insulation to meet their home’s needs. They also find that seals around doors and windows wear, allowing air leaks that steal precious heat.

Similarly, if you are in a winter survival situation, you need to run a home energy audit of your survival shelter. Your shelter probably won’t have much insulation and it will also have air leaks. Identify those so that you can do something about them.

Keeping a Log Cabin Warm

In the days of log cabins, they would do this in the fall, before the weather became really cold. Most log cabins were chinked with mud, which would eventually fall out of the cracks between the logs. They would mix up some more mud, using clay instead of dirt if they could, and fill the space between the logs, “chinking them.”

Another common area that was a problem was the area between the bottom log and the ground. The bottom log never fit perfectly with the ground, leaving a gap where wind could come through. They would take care of this gap by “banking” their cabin.

Banking is nothing more than piling up dirt around the edges of the cabin to fill this space between the bottom log and the ground. Typically, they would bank it up about half the height of that bottom log, just to make sure that it wouldn’t pack down or wash away. Some log cabins actually had enough dirt banked around them through the years that it made the cabin look as if it had been built partially underground.

The same idea will work with almost any survival shelter. It doesn’t matter if you’ve made a log cabin, a yurt or a dirt bag building, you’ll find the same sort of problem around the base. By taking the time to “bank” the bottom of the walls, you eliminate one possible path for cold air to come into your survival shelter.

Using Snow For Banking

Survival Shelter

Survival Shelter

There’s still more that you can do, though. Once it snows, you can bank the walls again with snow. In fact, I’d recommend banking the walls with snow every chance you get, until the snow is piled up against your walls up to the eaves of your shelter. By doing this, you create somewhat of a snow cave or igloo.

Let me explain what I’m after here. Obviously, if you have enough snow to bank it up to the eaves, you’re living in a very cold area. So cold, that you probably have temperatures which dip well below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. The interesting thing about that: The snow piled up against your house won’t get much colder than 32 degrees. In a very cold winter, that’s actually quite warm.

Without the snow, you might have temperatures below zero on the outside of your shelter’s walls. That greatly reduces the chance of ever having temperatures of 70 degrees on the inside of your shelter. The greater temperature differential will make it harder to heat your survival shelter.

Wait, There’s More

With your walls covered in snow, the inside of your survival shelter should be considerably warmer, even if it never does hit 70 degrees. So, why isn’t it reaching 70 degrees? Perhaps because you don’t have any insulation.

The insulation we’re referencing here consists of many pockets of air, separated by some material. The key, though, is those pockets of air. The more pockets there are or the more layers of pockets there are, the better the insulation can separate the heat from the cold.

Your survival shelter probably doesn’t have many layers of air pockets and may only have one. With only one layer, it’s hard to keep heat in. It’s better than zero, but not good enough. You need to add more layers between the walls of your shelter and the outside air. You especially need to do this on your roof.

The easiest way to add lots of air pockets between the roof of your shelter and the outside air is with pine boughs and a tarp. Cut the ends of pine branches off and pile them on your roof. This may require reinforcing your roof, but it’ll be worth it. Once you have a good layer of pine branches, stretch the tarp over them and tie it tightly in place. Trapped between the roof of your shelter and the tarp, the pine branches will begin to act like insulation, helping to keep the heat inside of your survival shelter.

With a little hard work, your survival shelter can be warmer than ever – so warm, you won’t want to leave.

6 Dirt-Cheap, Ingenious Ways To Water Animals During Winter

February 20, 2019 by chris

animals

Watering animals in the winter can be a huge headache for both small-scale homesteaders and large-scale farmers, especially if you’re off-grid. Certain animals, like dairy cows, need lots of water to keep up production. Producing 10-plus gallons of milk per day means they have to drink a lot more than 10 gallons of water. At the same time, water can be dangerous and create slippery conditions for animals that are prone to climb in and spill their buckets.

The most common tactic used by livestock owners is to try and keep water from freezing. This can be more daunting than you realize. Commercial farms water their animals in centralized tanks that can be heated electrically. However, that may not be an option for a small-scale or off-grid homesteader. Propane heaters are one potentially good, automatic off-grid option. Unfortunately, they can be dangerous if the pilot light goes out or if they are not adequately protected from the animals themselves. A number of other options are listed here.

Diatomaceous Earth: The All-Natural Livestock De-Wormer!

But there are a few low-tech ways to keep the water from freezing without a big investment.

1. Hauling warm water

For some animals, the best way to ensure they have water is to haul in fresh water every single day. Chickens and rabbits are small and require relatively little water per day. They can easily be managed off-grid by bringing them fresh water daily. For larger animals, you’ll want to employ one of the low-tech strategies below to keep the water fresh longer. Which means, that you’ll only have to water them every few days or only need to provide a small amount of water each day, saving a lot of labor and time.

2. Raised water platforms

The cold ground robs heat from water buckets placed directly upon it. Raising your watering station even a few inches off the ground can keep it from freezing in milder weather. Try a suspended water system for chickens. Or perhaps a bucket latched to the barn wall for larger animals such as pigs. Even a few inches can make a big difference.

3. Watering animals indoors

By watering the animals indoors, even in an unheated structure, the protection from the elements will keep the water in a liquid state much longer. Insulating both the structure and the water tank will further delay the water’s freezing. This may mean that you only need to bring fresh liquid water every few days.

4. Passive compost heating

The water also can be passively heated with the use of active compost. Place a water trough near a corner of the structure, and then each time the pen is cleaned, toss manure behind and around the trough to keep the water insulated with the manure — and perhaps even heated if the manure is in the right balance to make it hot. Remember to keep a clean path to the water by only piling on three sides of the trough.

5. Watering in feed

For animals like pigs and chickens, wetting down their food into a warm mash is a great way to prevent dehydration on an otherwise dry ration, and to help reduce feed waste, as well. Pig feed crumbles and much of it can be lost to dust if it’s not wet into a slurry. Adding a bucket of hot water to the feed will encourage the animals to consume all the feed while keeping them hydrated. But they can’t get quite all the water they need in feed, so making sure they have a good supply of liquid water (or snow if appropriate) is still important.

6. Watering animals with snow

Knowing that deer survive all winter outdoors without a liquid water source can help encourage you to provide snow to your animals to supplement their water supply. As long as there is ample fresh snow that hasn’t been packed down into ice or covered with excrement, many animals, including horses and ducks, can do quite well. Fussy animals, such as chickens may refuse to eat snow, even to the point of dying of dehydration before leaving the warmth of their coop. You’ll need to evaluate on a case-by-case basis based on the temperament and breed of your animals. Even if they readily eat snow, it’s still a good idea to bring them a small bucket of warm water daily to make sure they’re staying well-hydrated. Dairy animals producing a significant amount of extra liquid in the form of milk will still require daily supplementation with a large supply of water.

When Not to Water

Believe it or not, there are some animals that should not be watered when temperatures are below freezing. Ducks and geese love fresh water, but they use it more for bathing than drinking. No matter how small the outlet, ducks may thrash against it to create a puddle to bathe in. This will satisfy them temporarily, but if the temperatures are more than just a few degrees below freezing, they’re likely to create an ice slick. Basically gluing themselves to the ground by their chest feathers and feet. Once they realize their predicament, they’ll thrash and injure themselves, often mortally. To avoid these risks, only provide fresh water to water fowl on days when the temps are above freezing. Otherwise, make sure they have an ample supply of fresh snow, even if it means shoveling it in from outside of their yard.

How To Make Your Own Snowshoes In A Survival Situation

February 19, 2019 by chris

snowshoes

Snowshoes have been used for hundreds if not thousands of years in one form or another, and for good reason. When the snow is soft, our feet sink right into it with each step. Even when the snow is hard and crusty, it can still yield to the steps of our weight. The result: We cover less terrain in a season where the daylight hours are already short, and we spend much more energy than needed.

Snowshoes have long been the remedy. They’ve proven effective by distributing the weight of a user over the area of the snowshoe, so that the snowshoe only sinks minimally (if at all) into the snow.

Modern-day snowshoe kits can be purchased for around $60 to $80 for basic models, and hundreds of dollars for top-of-the-line products. But if you don’t want to spend this kind of cash – or if you’re stuck in the woods after a surprise snowstorm — then your other option is to make a pair of more traditional snowshoes out of natural materials. They may look rudimentary, but if done right, they’ll work and can be used again.

The branches from willow trees work the best for forming snowshoes, since they last long and are bendable. If there are no willow trees in your backyard, you can always take a Saturday to do some searching out in the woods. While willow trees are not the only tree you can use, they do work the best, by far.

Collect plenty of willow branches, and get some cord and a good knife (tape also can be helpful). Trails.com recommends making snowshoes about six inches longer than your regular shoes. Get two long willow branches (about two inches round) for the frames and lots of smaller pieces for the crosspieces. Strip the bark.

Story continues below the video:

Heat the branches over a fire, but without burning them to make them more flexible, and then bend a long branch into the size and shape of the snowshoe you want (a teardrop shape). Ideally, your snowshoe should be several inches wider than your foot. Once you have reached a size you want, take some cord and tie the ends.

The next step is to set smaller willow branches across the frame of the snowshoe. Set one branch across the middle of the snowshoe and another branch across the ball of your foot. Proceed to set across more crosspieces spaced a couple of inches apart from each other. (These will support your shoe.) Tie the ends of each piece onto the frame, tightly with the cord.

Take more branches and form a crisscross on the branch pieces you just tied on. Use as much cord as you need to ensure that the pieces are fully secured.

The final step is to tie some rope or leather onto the snowshoe for your shoes or boots to fit in. This rope should be tied around the entire snowshoe, and also needs to be fastened tightly and securely. If your boots don’t fit tightly onto the snowshoe, the snowshoes won’t work properly.

Even if your new snowshoes don’t exactly look professional on your first try, they should work. Test them out by walking around in the snow; you can re-tie them to start all over again if your first attempt doesn’t go as expected. Initially, extended use of the snowshoes may make your feet and ankles sore, and while you may struggle with using the snowshoes effectively, practice makes perfect. Give it a go, read up on tips on how to wear the snowshoes effectively, and good luck!

If $117000 Is Low Income In San Francisco, What’s Next For America?

February 19, 2019 by chris

Will violence be unavoidable in a city where $117000 is low income?

Although it’s hard to even fathom, a family making $117000 is low income in the San Francisco Bay Area. To explain, a Bay Area household must earn over $117000 a year for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to consider it “middle class.”

In addition, HUD labels $73,000 as “very low income” in three California counties. Those counties are Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo, SF Gate reports.

On the other hand, the median household income in the United States in 2017 was $61,400 per year, the Census Bureau estimates. As a result, the average American middle-class family will be far under the low-income figure in San Francisco.

Furthermore, if $117000 annually is low income in San Francisco, then $61400 a year would be extreme poverty there. Consequently, the average American cannot afford to live in San Francisco.

$117000 Is Low Income: The Average American Cannot Afford To Live In San Francisco

In fact, the average home in “The City by the Bay” costs $1.382 million, as Zillow reports. Conversely, the median home price nationwide is $222,000.

Moreover, it now costs $3,261 per month to rent a one-bedroom apartment in San Francisco, RentCafe calculates. Additionally, a two-bedroom apartment costs $4,377 in San Francisco.

Under these circumstances, the average American family would wind up homeless in San Francisco. Likewise, CNBC claims that 7,500 people were living on San Francisco’s streets during 2017.

Tech Billionaire San Francisco Is A Train Wreck

Astonishingly, San Francisco’s cost of living disgusts even tech billionaires. Particularly, software billionaire Marc Benioff describes San Francisco as a train wreck.

“San Francisco is kind of a train wreck, we have a real inequality problem,” Benioff tells CNBC. “It’s because of the tech sector.”

Benioff can afford to live in San Francisco because he is worth $6.4 billion. Notably, Benioff is CEO of the business software giant Salesforce.

Benioff is one of 74 billionaires that call the Bay Area home, WealthX estimates. On the whole, the Bay Area boasts the third largest concentration of billionaires on Earth. However, Benioff still maintains that San Francisco leads America in homelessness.

San Francisco: It’s A Canary In A Coal Mine Since $117000 Is Low Income There

Specifically, HUD calculated that the number of homeless people in California grew by 13.7% in 2017. Moreover, HUD estimates there were 134,000 homeless people in California in 2017.

“In some ways, San Francisco is the canary in the coal mine,” Benioff warns. “We have to look at San Francisco and say here’s the best technology example in the world and yet the worst homelessness.”

To expand upon Benioff’s statement, miners took canaries into coal mines before modern instruments existed. Canaries can “detect” poison gas by dying before miners. So, the miners could escape before a deadly gas build up.

San Francisco-Level Income Inequality All Over America

Ultimately, Benioff believes that the train wreck in San Francisco could occur nationwide. In particular, Benioff is afraid of San Francisco-level income inequality all over America.

Therefore, $117,000 could become low income in your town and nobody but millionaires could afford a home. Under such circumstances, violent revolution or civil unrest is the inevitable result.

In fact, historians blame the French Revolution on income inequality. Income inequality in France in 1789 became so bad that working people could no longer afford food.

Tellingly, some Silicon Valley billionaires are stockpiling ammunition and guns and building private fortresses, The Business Insider reports. Significantly, the billionaire doomsday preppers fear mob violence.

In the final analysis, all preppers must watch San Francisco closely because violence is unavoidable in a city where $117000 is low income. All Americans should also prepare for the spread of San Francisco-level income inequality.

NFL Paid Kaepernick $60 To $80 Million To Settle: Report

February 19, 2019 by chris

Colin Kaepernick received between $60 and $80 million in an out-of-court settlement with the NFL, according to NFL columnist Mike Freeman, who tweeted on Friday: “Number NFL team officials are speculating to me is the NFL paid Kaepernick in the $60 to $80 million range.”

While the exact terms of the settlement have not been revealed, Kaepernick attorney Mark Geragos released a statement following Freeman’s tweet, noting that the terms of the agreement are subject to a confidentiality agreement.

For the past several months, counsel for Mr. Kaepernick and Mr. Reid have engaged in an ongoing dialogue with representatives of the NFL. As a result of those discussions, the parties have decided to resolve the pending grievances. The resolution of this matter is subject to a confidentiality agreement so there will be no further comment by any party.
