Understanding Your Growing Zone To Prepare For Spring Gardening

February 16, 2019 by chris

A significant part of off-grid living is producing a wide variety of food that will add to, and satisfy, your meal planning. With spring approaching, you should already be planning your garden for the coming growing season. It’s the perfect time to decide what changes to make from the last season. Producing an abundance of food involves knowing what kind of plants will grow well in your area. You can do this by understanding your growing zone to prepare for spring gardening this year.

Growing zones for gardening

Identify Your Zone

The first step to understanding your growing zone is to research the conditions in your area. A handy tool is the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map. This map will help you identify your zone’s number as well as a letter that designates what plants will thrive in your area.

Growing zones are not equally divided on the map. Some transitional areas where two growing zones meet can offer varying conditions. There are also spots around the country that include micro-climates.

Someone living on a mountaintop or in a valley may have an entirely different zone designation than surrounding areas. Growing zones depend on climate as well as your surroundings. Nearby bodies of water or mountains can drastically affect your zone.

If your off-grid home is a mountain cabin that gets a good deal of snow, don’t rule out planting a winter garden. Onions and shallots can handle a harsh winter. Garlic, broad beans, and asparagus will grow year-round with several harvest dates.

Some varieties of spinach will provide you with enough to harvest over the winter and early spring. Pak choi is also an excellent winter crop. This Asian vegetable is an excellent choice for winter salads. The succulent stems also go well in a stir-fried dish in the spring.

Growing zones for gardening

Keep in mind; these winter vegetables don’t always survive in an area with scorching heat and constant summer sun. Once again, it’s crucial to know your growing zone.

Keep Past Weather in Mind

You are the best source of information when it comes to the typical weather conditions in your area. The long term forecast may help, but you’re the expert on what to expect during certain months of the year.

If you’ve had a mild winter, you may be comfortable starting to prepare your garden earlier in the spring than you have in previous years. However, if your winter has been quite cold, you may want to hold off a little longer, so you don’t lose an entire crop to frost. Taking note of the past seasons is essential when planning for spring planting.

Know Your Frost Dates

Your growing zone will have specific dates by which the last frost usually occurs in the spring. This date is essential to maximize your growing time and produce a bountiful harvest.

Off-grid residents in the south will experience much earlier final frost dates than those in the north. Some southern gardeners may live in an area where frost isn’t a problem, making it possible for them to plant year-round.

You also need to anticipate the first frost date of the fall. Counting the days between your last frost date in the spring and the first frost date in the fall will give you an idea of the length of your growing season. Some plants require more than 90 days to mature. This doesn’t rule them out; it just means you’ll have to start the seedlings in indoor planters.

Growing zones for gardening

Watch Temperatures Closely

Since those frost dates are merely estimates, you need to prepare yourself for a sudden drop in temperatures. Even the best forecaster needs to check the thermometer at night to get an idea of when it’s safe to plant.

Once you’ve sown seeds, continue to monitor temperature changes that could rapidly occur with spring thunderstorms. Make sure you keep the seeds and young plants warm if the temperature drops below freezing. Consider covering these areas overnight, to maintain a warm temperature for the soil as well as the plants.

Choose Cool and Warm Season Plants

Cool season vegetables thrive in the spring and take advantage of the cooler temperatures that cool mornings and nights can bring. These types of plants include peas, broccoli, lettuce, beets, and beans. As long as you plant these after the first frost, you’ll reap the benefits by the end of spring.

Many off-grid gardeners choose to begin warm season plants by starting seeds in a greenhouse or windowsill. This works well with tomatoes, melons, and vine vegetables like cucumbers that need a little more time to mature. You can then transplant these sun-loving plants in the latter part of the spring once the ground has warmed.

Growing zones for gardening

Save Your Seeds

Many growing areas will see a short, cool season in the early spring followed by a longer warmer season during summer and then another short, cooler season in the fall. Save the seeds from cool-season plants and plant them in the fall. This will extend your growing season for a few more months and produce enough seeds to replant the following spring. Understanding your growing zone will help you reap the maximum benefit from your vegetable garden.

Living off the grid means being eco-friendly and using fewer resources. You can do this by also saving the seeds of your warm season fruits and vegetables. You’ll need to dry them out and place them in a container for storage. You won’t be able to use these seeds until the following summer, but it’s an excellent way to save money and keep the variety in your garden.

Growing zones for gardening

Eating freshly harvested food without additives or pesticides is just one of the many benefits of living off the grid. However, the independent lifestyle we enjoy comes with a responsibility to work with Mother Nature.

Understanding how your soil responds to different weather conditions will help you reap a bountiful supply of produce to last throughout the year. Consider all of these tips when understanding your growing zone to prepare for spring gardening.

Now in 24 States, ‘Zombie Deer’ Disease Could Spread to Humans

February 15, 2019 by chris

An infectious diseases expert has warned that chronic wasting disease, which is killing deer in the Upper Midwest and has been reported in at least 24 states, could infect humans in the near future.

Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, told lawmakers recently that chronic wasting disease (CWD) should be treated as a public health issue, the Pioneer Press reported.

“It is probable that human cases of CWD associated with the consumption of contaminated meat will be documented in the years ahead,” Osterholm said. “It is possible that the number of human cases will be substantial and will not be isolated events.”

As of January, CWD has been found in deer, elk or moose in at least 24 U.S. states and two Canadian provinces, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. It is also found in farmed deer and elk.

CWD is caused by a malformed protein — or prion — that infects animals’ brains, according to the University of Minnesota’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Because of its symptoms, some people have called it “zombie deer disease.”

The CDC said symptoms include drastic weight loss, stumbling, lack of coordination, listlessness, drooling, lack of fear of people and aggression. An animal could carry the infection for more than a year and not show any signs of CWD.

Off Grid Shipping Container Home In California

February 15, 2019 by chris

In the high desert of Joshua Tree, California, ‘The Haven’, a cozy shipping container home with a rooftop deck, sits completely off the grid on 5 acres. When deciding which type of home to build on their land, owners Aram and Elisabeth decided a shipping container home would best suit the quirky culture around Joshua Tree National Park.

The home was built by Alternative Living Spaces in collaboration with Container Guys Intl. Its remote location, accessed by a long drive down a dirt road, necessitates off grid living. This project demonstrates that living off the grid in a climate with less-than-ideal conditions is not only possible, but can be stylishly comfortable.

We featured one of Alternative Living Spaces’ luxury shipping container homes in a previous article, and it has remained one of our favorite container home builds to date. The Haven is another beautiful example of luxury living in a tiny space.

This home is built from a 20 foot used shipping container, for a total of 143 square feet of indoor living space. It includes a rooftop deck, bathroom, bedroom, small kitchen area, and patio.

The 12 foot sliding glass doors brighten the interior and open up to the spacious, partially-covered patio deck.

The interior features shiplap walls, bronze fixtures, a barn door leading to the bathroom, and a small kitchen and seating area with a granite countertop.

The full bathroom holds a corrugated steel shower, toilet, and vanity with a mirror. A septic system on the property handles the wastewater.

The rooftop deck, accessed by a ladder, is enclosed by cable fence rails and gives the family a place to enjoy the incredible views of the night sky – a perk that Joshua Tree Park is well-known for. The rooftop and the ground-level deck offer plenty of outdoor living space to complement the home.

Because their property is surrounded by nature preserves, Aram and Elisabeth chose to leave as small a footprint as possible for their living space. Instead of digging a well, they haul water in to a large holding tank, from which a pump feeds the water to the house.

Solar panels power the home, including the lights and an air conditioner to offset the intense summer heat. A fireplace heats the home when nights get cold.

A second shipping container serves as the family’s storage space and holds the three panels in the solar array.

This residence is ideal for full time off grid living, a getaway home in the mountains (or desert!), or as an Airbnb rental. See the video below for a tour of the home and an interview with the builders and owners.

The History Of Border Walls: Do They Work?

February 15, 2019 by chris

In the history of border walls, the Great Wall of China is the biggest, most famous, and most successful of them all.

The history of border walls demonstrates that President Trump has made a bold move with his government shutdown strategy. In fact, the history of border walls shows that such barriers have achieved both great success and spectacular failure depending on the situation.

Historically, a wide variety of governments ranging from Romans to Communists built border walls. However, the overall history of border walls reveals that such structures only work under certain conditions.

As shocking as it may seem, border walls do often work against the threats governments design them to stop. Notwithstanding, border walls rarely keep out greater threats that leaders do not expect.

The History Of Border Walls Shows When Walls Work: The Great Wall Of China

The biggest, most famous, and most successful border wall in history is the Great Wall of China. Notably, the Great Wall is over 5,500 miles long and 28 centuries old.

In particular, the Great Wall helped preserve China as the world’s oldest and most successful nation. For example, the Great Wall kept out some invaders and allowed China’s emperors to collect customs duties.

Significantly, the Ming Dynasty (1388-1644) built the current Great Wall. The current wall was partially successful because it kept out central Asian invaders such as the Mongols. Nevertheless, the Wall did not stop the Manchus, a northern Chinese people, from conquering China and setting up the Qin Dynasty in 1644.

In addition, the Great Wall provided no protection from a far more dangerous group of invaders, European colonialists who arrived by ship. For instance, the Great Wall did not stop British, Indian, and French forces from sacking Beijing and looting the Imperial Palace during the Second Opium War in 1860.

As a result, the resources spent maintaining the Great Wall could have been better utilized on a Chinese Navy. Then again, it’s important to remember that a wall will never solve every security and defense issue on its own.

The History Of Border Walls In Roman Times

The most famous Roman wall was Hadrian’s Wall in Britain. This structure’s purpose was to contain Roman imperialism and prevent overexpansion rather than to keep invaders out. To explain, Emperor Hadrian was trying to avoid a costly Roman occupation of Scotland.

Consequently, Hadrian built a wall clear across the island of Great Britain. The idea was to protect Roman Britain from Scottish raids without occupying Scotland.

In essence, Hadrian’s Wall marks the northern boundary of Roman Britain. Furthermore, some historians believe that the purpose of Hadrian’s Wall was to control immigration.

Hadrian’s wall ultimately worked, as it kept Scotland and Roman Britain (England and Wales) as separate countries with separate languages and cultures for centuries. Moreover, Hadrian’s Wall runs along today’s English/Scottish border.

The History Of Border Walls That Work: The Walls Of Constantinople

The walls of Constantinople may be the most successful fortification in human history.

Specifically, the walls kept Constantinople (today’s Istanbul) safe from invaders for nearly 1,000 years. The walls of Constantinople also kept the city and the Byzantine Empire safe through dozens of sieges.

On the whole, many historians credit the walls of Constantinople with preserving Christianity and western civilization. To elaborate further, Arab forces could not get through the walls during the Siege of Constantinople in 674 AD–678 AD.

The belief is that the Arabs could have overrun all of Europe if they had conquered the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) Empire in its capital of Constantinople. In the final analysis, Europe and America could be Muslim today if it were not for the walls of Constantinople.

Historic Border Walls Eventually Fail At Constantinople

Nonetheless, the walls of Constantinople could not keep out the Catholic knights of the Fourth Crusade. In 1204, the Crusaders conquered Constantinople, looted the city, and set up the so-called Latin (Catholic) Empire of Constantinople.

On the other hand, the Orthodox Christian Greeks would reconquer the city in 1261 and restore the Byzantine Empire. Yet, in 1453, the Ottoman Turkish Forces of Sultan Mehmed II blasted through the walls with cannons during the fall of Constantinople. But no army would enter Constantinople again until 1918 when British forces occupied the city at the end of World War I.

The History Of Border Walls That Did Not Work In The 20th Century

Recent history, though, demonstrates that border walls often fail as well. For example, most of the walls built in the 20th Century are failures.

To illustrate, historians regard the Maginot Line, a series of fortifications on the French/German border, as a spectacular failure. The success of fortresses in World War I had convinced the French army to build the Maginot Line. However, new technologies like airplanes and tanks allowed modern armies to bypass fortresses.

Notably, the Maginot Line failed because it did not cover France’s border with Belgium. As a consequence, the Germans went around the Maginot Line to conquer France in 1940 during World War II. By and large, the fortresses stuck French armies on the Maginot Line while the Germans were already rolling into Paris.

The Atlantic Wall

Conversely, the largest border barrier of the 20th Century, the 3,231-mile long Nazi Atlantic Wall, was partially successful. In particular, the Allies did not attack most of the areas that the Nazis fortified between Norway and Southern France.

Nevertheless, the Allies could pierce the Atlantic Wall in two places. First of all, British, Canadian, and American forces landed far to the west of most German defenses in Normandy at D-Day during June 1944. Secondly, American, French, and British forces made an uncontested landing in the south of France during Operation Dragoon in August 1944.

All in all, the Atlantic Wall was a failure because it did not prevent the invasion of Europe. Additionally, the Atlantic Wall contributed to Nazi Germany’s defeat by diverting forces from the Russian Front, Italy, and North Africa.

The Berlin Wall, The Biggest Wall Failure In History

The most famous wall of the 20th Century, the Berlin Wall, may very well be the most unsuccessful as well.

The Berlin Wall’s original purpose was ostensibly to keep immigrants in the country of East Germany. To explain, East Germany’s communist dictatorship built the wall to keep its citizens from leaving. Notwithstanding, the official name of the Berlin Wall is the Anti-Fascist Bulwark. This is because East German propaganda claimed that the wall kept fascists out of East Germany.

The Berlin Wall is a failure because its fall in 1989 signaled the end of East Germany and the Cold War. Altogether, East Germany’s end came when two million people from East Berlin flooded through the Anti-Fascist Bulwark to enjoy freedom in West Berlin.

Notable moments in Berlin Wall history include speeches by Presidents John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan and a concert by David Hasselhoff. Oddly enough, Hasselhoff gave a concert at the wall on New Year’s Eve 1989, which was the night it came down.

In fact, the Baywatch and Knight Rider star is a major pop singer in Germany. Moreover, Hasselhoff’s ballad Looking for Freedom is a beloved song in East Germany.

The History Of Border Walls Is Still Incomplete

In conclusion, history teaches us that walls work best against expected enemies and threats. As we’ve seen, the Great Wall of China was no defense against British warships in the 19th Century.

So, Trump’s border wall could certainly hinder illegal immigrants from Central America. However, the wall would be no barrier to seaborne migrants from countries like Venezuela. Significantly, the Brookings Institution predicts that eight million refugees could flee hyperinflation and political turmoil in Venezuela this year. Only the future will tell us if Trump’s wall will work effectively, but should undocumented immigrants be able to simply walk across the border without any deterrence whatsoever?

Child-Safe Kitchen Remedies For The Cold And Flu

Child-Safe Kitchen Remedies For The Cold And Flu

Cold and flu season is upon us, and children tend to catch every little sickness that comes their way. While conventional medicine has its place and time, parents can turn to home remedies for kids when their children are feeling under the weather. Please check with your doctor first about these child-safe home remedies.

Sore Throats

At times, a sore throat can indicate strep throat. Symptoms of strep include pain while chewing or swallowing and a fever above 101.3 degrees Fahrenheit. Contact your doctor if you child is showing these signs of strep. But if it’s just a sore throat try these:

  • Echinacea. This should be the first choice for parents looking to use child-safe remedies. Give your child Echinacea as soon as a runny nose or scratchy throat begins. You can use Echinacea tea or a safe dose of liquid Echinacea. Adults can take it in a capsule form.
  • Honey and lemon. If your child is under one year old, honey is not safe due to botulism. But for kids in the safe-age range, honey is one of the best remedies for sore throats. Simply mix warm water, raw honey and lemon juice.
  • Peppermint. Kids over the age of six years old can have diluted peppermint essential oil applied to them. Another option safe for most ages is peppermint tea. It will soothe the throat, break up mucus and make your throat feel amazing.
  • Salt water gargling. A simple home remedy for sore throats is gargling salt water. Add a teaspoon or two of salt to a glass of warm water. Have your child gargle the salt water twice a day. It is one of the easiest and best-known remedies for a sore throat!

Flu

The flu can present itself with many symptoms. Rest and hydration top the list for cures!

  • Elderberry syrup. You can find elderberry syrup in the store or you make it yourself. It is best if you take it daily to prevent the flu. However, for those with the flu, take a dose 3 to 5 times per day. Fortunately, elderberry syrup tastes relatively good!
  • Activated charcoal. Keeping activated charcoal around your house is wise. Not only does it help with a stomach bug, but activated charcoal also works for food poisoning. Activated charcoal binds your digestive tract and helps the process. It is best taken as a capsule, but you can mix it in food. Speak to your doctor first!

Chest Colds and Coughs

  • Eucalyptus. Make sure that your child is within the safe-age range to use eucalyptus, typically six years old due to issues with respiration. However, you can safely add a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil to your bath water, along with Epsom salt, for children.
  • Steam. When your child has a chest cold and a cough, you can have your child hold his head over a bowl of hot water. Put a towel around his head. You want him to breathe in the steam for at least 10 minutes. Put a drop or two of eucalyptus oil in the water to add more benefits!
  • Bay leaves. You might use bay leaves in your soups, but it serves other purposes! Take three to four bay leaves, and add to water and boil. Then, remove the leaves and dip a cloth into the water. Wring it out and place it on your child’s chest, only if the heat is tolerable and won’t hurt your child!
  • Turmeric milk. If your child is at least one year old, you can try turmeric milk! Turmeric contains antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties. Governments urged to stockpile antibiotics for a future flu pandemic

February 14, 2019 by chris

Stockpiling antibiotics to use in the event of a pandemic influenza outbreak could save billions of pounds worldwide, according to a new analysis.

In the first study to model the financial value of holding antibiotics back to use in a global flu outbreak, researchers have found that an effective drug would save the world between $3 and $4 billion (£2.3 to £3.1 billion). The official report into the 2009 swine flu epidemic found that it cost the UK alone £1.24 billion.

Between 50 and 100 million people died during the 1919 Spanish flu pandemic when the virus swept across the globe but the vast majority of these deaths were caused by secondary bacterial infections rather than the flu virus itself.
